Unique eyewear, expert advice and great frame vendor support enhances optical experience

Optical manager Warren Ruby knows that it can be overwhelming for patients to walk into an optical filled of hundreds of frames. “It’s like when you rent a movie, and you don’t know what to watch,” he says. “There are so many, where do you start?” Ruby is happy to play matchmaker, calling upon his 37 years of optical experience and knowledge of fitting flattering frames. Patients make appointments for his expert advice and styling guidance at Broadway Vision Source in Capitol Hill, Wash.

When Ruby meets with a patient, he quickly can eliminate 98 percent of the practice’s 900 frame offerings just by looking at the patient’s facial shape and coloring. He often finds a great match for his clients from Ogi Eyewear in either the Ogi or Seraphin lines. Ruby has worked with these lines for years in other practices, so when he came to Broadway Vision Source four years ago, he contacted Ogi representative Amber Bay so the practice could become a new customer. Ruby very carefully selects his vendor partnerships – a decision based both on the quality of the product and the value that the vendor’s representatives bring to the practice. He knew Bay for years in the industry, and he says he knew her exceptional service and high-quality frames would make a great addition in the practice.

Frames from Ogi Eyewear have always been a go-to starting point for patients with petite faces and/or narrow PD measurements. Since Ruby started working with the company, it has expanded to include an array of additional options. The Ogi line has great versatility in color and design, Ruby says. “The Ogi frames are amazing with some of the new P3 vintage styles in smaller sizes, which are very sellable, and then larger vintage styles with unique colors such as green and wood tones that are unique to Ogi.”

The Seraphin line includes some of the practice’s most popular styles. The Seraphin line offers contemporary and vintage frames, created with excellent quality and beautiful styles. “We can’t keep them in stock,” Ruby says. The Kipling and Harrison designs have been hot sellers. “The Kipling design is a new vintage-looking frame in smaller sizes. If someone comes in looking for a chunky, contemporary vintage look, that frame will walk out the door every day,” he says. The Harrison is available in many colors and temple designs for a more average-sized face.

There’s something special about a product that needs little promotion and virtually sells itself because of its appeal. Ogi Eyewear provides frames that capture the sizes, colors and quality that patients are looking for. And since Ogi Eyewear is backed by excellent representation and customer service when it comes to new products or warranties, Ruby is happy to continue to this relationship. “With Ogi Eyewear, I never question whether they will back us up so we can provide better service to our clients,” Ruby says.

A Tip from the Cosmetic Industry

Clients at Broadway Vision Source value the time they spend with optical managerWarren Ruby, regularly booking appointments for a frame-styling consultation. It takes him only a matter of seconds to find a complimentary frame for a client because he’s been developing his skills for more than 30 years in the optical industry. Ruby shares that he picked up some of his best advice in 1970s by applying tips from the late Helena Rubinstein, the cosmetics magnate. Rubinstein paid close attention to skin types and facial shape, and Ruby saw how this could carry over to the way he styled customers with frames. He studied the best matches and learned how to make people look and feel their best with a new pair of eyeglasses. “I could see what colors would be best for their skin tone and facial shape,” he says. It’s a skill he puts to use every day now, and his dedication to making patients look unique and fabulous has earned him a loyal following.

As part of our efforts to give back to our community, Dr....

As part of our efforts to give back to our community, Dr. Matsunami sees patients who are referred to us from the Seattle YWCA each Thursday who are homeless (under the Eyecare for the Homeless Program in King County). This is a letter that was handed to us by one of these patients (name blotted out for confidentiality), that really touched our collective hearts.
